[...] Back in 2010, I started a 365 photo project that some of you may remember. It came to a sad end near the 3 month mark because I took on a new job that didn’t afford me the time to keep going. So, if you’ve been reading the blog at all, you’ll know that as of November of last year, my sole focus is running One Bright Spot Photography here in Jacksonville. As such, I now have the time to start this project up once more.
Actually, depending on the softbox it might be ok. I've been using a Westcott Apollo Mono 28 in. softbox on location and its worked ok. It handles the wind better than an umbrella, that's for sure. However, the Westcott also folds down into a an umbrella form factor, so that helps.

Terrific presentation on soft-box versus umbrella. Here's a question:
I was thinking about getting a small softbox called FireFly Beauty Dish for outdoor location shooting of portraits and fashion. After reading your piece I'm thinking an umbrella might be better. I could not be hauling a large softbox to locations. Cheers.

I'm thinking this would be a neat way to capture a dance move or a basketball jump to the basket, or cheerleaders that hold up one of the girls by one foot and suddenly drop her (and catch her). Something I'm going to have to try.

A couple of notes:
1) Rpt is also available as one of the standard (non remote/channel) modes.
2) It takes longer than .5 sec to execute 5x10Hz - tried this with my finger moving in front of the camera and only got two images. It seems to take TWICE the amount expected (a whole second in this case). This was true if I scaled the exposure for faster Hz as well.
The logic here seems to be that that the time in between the strobes needs to be included in the calculation. So 10 flashes at 10 Hz will actually require 2 seconds.
This was not what I expected. I'm an engineer and 10Hz is still 10/sec, but that's what I encountered using my D50 (yes, I know I need to upgrade) :)
Hope that was useful to your readers.
