Actually, depending on the softbox it might be ok. I’ve been using a Westcott Apollo Mono 28 in. softbox on location and its worked ok. It handles the wind better than an umbrella, that’s for sure. However, the Westcott also folds down into a an umbrella form factor, so that helps.

Terrific presentation on soft-box versus umbrella. Here’s a question:
I was thinking about getting a small softbox called FireFly Beauty Dish for outdoor location shooting of portraits and fashion. After reading your piece I’m thinking an umbrella might be better. I could not be hauling a large softbox to locations. Cheers.

Nice one Jacob. I am building a studio and I think this will make me experiment with both. It looks like Umbrella for high key, lighted white background and Softbox for moody low key black background and B&W. Thank You.

This was great…thanks so much for the info! Do you suggest any other ways to set up the lighting? I have been doing portrait photography for awhile, but most of it was in a studio that was set up for me…when I broke out on my own I started shooting primarily outdoors, but since we moved to St. Louis it’s too cold to rely on that year round. I am trying to get something set up indoors before I loose another winter of portraits. I am also looking for a way to get more light in situations such a weddings, etc. If you don’t mind, I’d appreciate any feedback!

BTW…the pictures are REALLY helpful!
