With oil selling around $55 a barrel and probably headed lower, this was bound to happen, but man does it feel good. I needed to fill up yesterday and I decided to pull into my local Hess gas station and I was greeted with this wonderful sight: gas at $1.99 per gallon. Sure, it was sitting at just above $2 for a day or two now, but there is just something mentally pleasing about that sub-$2 mark.
It reminds me of when I first saw gas go over $2 (at least, it’s the first I remember). Katrina hit in the fall of 2005 and I went with my unit to go and rescue stranded survivors. When we got there, the gas stations that were operating were selling for just over $2 and it shocked all of us. Since then, the highest I’ve paid for gas is $4.09 (sorry for all of you out in California).
This is especially good for my wife and I. We’re doing the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University course and we have to budget everything. Well, we’ve had to set aside $400 for gas a month since I go to college way across Jacksonville and we both drive seperate vehicles. Well, since our fuel costs are almost cut in half now, that’s nearly $200 more a month that we’re going to have. Even better, that’s $200 being spent on photography gear going into savings. Wonderful.
Here are the results of my filling up a nearly empty tank in my ’95 Toyota Celica:
Yeah, that’s a whole lot better than this.
