Testing the RPT function of the SB800

    By Jacob Vorpahl | August 29, 2008

So, last night, even though my day was pretty bad, and the Jags were playing, I managed to snap a few photos. I actually had an idea in my mind for a shot with a buddy of mine riding his bike and having some lights attached. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to get to the store to pick up the lights so we decided to experiment elsewhere. After goofing around a little, I remembered the SB800s RPT (repeat) function and wanted to test that out. So I pulled out one and we started taking some photos of my friend Matt running around, prancing (yes, prancing- his idea!), and doing frog jumps (my idea..). Well, after continually fiddling around with everything, and thankfully not blowing a flash, I got three SB800s to strobe really fast, probably 6 times in one second, thereabouts, at 1/8 power. This was the result:

Now, keep in mind that we were just testing and this is in no way supposed to a compositionally great photo. However, it does show what you can do and if you look close, doing something like this, with someone in motion, really allows you to see the different muscles work (life his right calf completely flexed on the right most exposure). After playing around with, I have some shot ideas in my head that I really want to try out now. I also think I’m going to make a detailed tutorial on how to get the shot set up.
